TRENDING FLOOR: SPC FLOORING

Jan 17, 2022
TRENDING FLOOR: SPC FLOORING
In the year of 2016, SPC flooring has become a trending product in our market. It is the only floor decoration material that can be recycled to protect our planet’s natural resources as well as the environment. SPC flooring is a new environmentally friendly floor developed based on high technology, featuring zero formaldehyde, mildew proof, waterproof, fireproof, insect-proof, and simple installation. It is made of stone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and a special stabilizer. It is an upgrade version of luxury vinyl flooring and it is designed with a click locking system.
The new product called SPC Flooring is also vinyl floor but it is defined as Stone Plastic Composite. This is most durable waterproof vinyl flooring option in the market. SPC is generally composed of 4 layers which are including:

  • Support layer: the backbone of your board.
  • SPC Core:  It does not ripple, swell, or peel, regardless of the liquid to which you submit it. This nucleus is ultra-dense without the use of foaming agents. It prevents expansion and contraction. It also gives you a little less resilience under your feet, but it makes the floor more durable.
  • Printed vinyl layer: this is where you get your photographic images that make vinyl (almost) identical to natural materials like marble, stone, and wood.
  • Wear layer: this is similar to the traditional vinyl. It is to protect the authentic color and embossing from abrasion. The thickness of a wear layer of SPC flooring of a wear layer is between 0.30 mm and 0.50mm.
1) Pros and Cons of SPC Flooring

PROS

  • Easy installation- SPC flooring can be installed in two methods, either with glue or with a loose-lay floor. They are floating and come with a click interlocking system, so it will be easy to install them above both the raw and existing surface, hence cut down the cost of installation
  • Durable- SPC flooring is the most durable vinyl flooring in the market
  • Eco-friendly- SPC flooring can be recycled and many of the materials used in its production are those of renewable products.
  • Waterproof- Due to their PVC core layer, these planks can withstand liquids. Regardless there are dirty shoes or spilling liquids on the floor all this will no longer be a problem
  • Underfoot Comfort- A thin layer of foam is normally used to backed SPC flooring. This structure adds softness and flexibility and makes standing long hours feel less tired..
CONS
  • Difficult To Remove Once Installed- Depend on the type of SPC flooring installed, removing adhesive type would be hard to remove.
  • Not Fade resistance – if you’re putting SPC in a spot that has a lot of natural light, it can fade over time. We don’t recommend it for sunrooms.
  • No extra resale vlue added- Resell your home will be lower with SPC than true hardwood (Solid) floors.

     2) Is SPC Flooring a good choice?

SPC flooring is a good choice for you if you focus on the durability and longevity of floorings. It is an affordable choice for the main floors of residential homes in kitchens, living spaces, and laundry room since it is waterproof. It is also good for basements where you’ll benefit from waterproofing, as well as vacation homes, or rental homes as it is very low maintenance because of the anti-stain feature of SPC flooring and is cost-effective to change out to maintain a modern look.

3) What are the types of SPC Floorings?
There are 3 brands of SPC Flooring available in Floor Culture, which are including Shaw, Muji and Protex. Shaw Flooring is made in US and it is easier to identify how their products are designed to keep material, moisture, sound, air, and clean. The thickness of Shaw flooring is 5.5mm, which is including a cork underlayment with the floorboard. Secondly, Muji flooring has two types, which are Moku and Rokku. Moku is in wooden pattern series while Rokku is in stone pattern series. The thickness of both series is the same which is 5mm and attached with 1mm IXPE underlayment while the size is different. Lastly, Protex SPC flooring comes with a 4mm thickness and a 0.3mm of wear layer. SPC Vinyl Flooring can have a variety of pattern, design, texture, and color that you may choose to cater to your preference.

4) How to maintain the floor?

The way to take care of SPC flooring is pretty simple. As it is waterproof, just have to ensure that you have a regular routine of basic cleaning like sweeping and moping. However, there are few things that we have to be extra careful of which is including cleaning after installation, types of cleaning tools and solutions used. Wash the floor occasionally with a gentle (non-abrasive) floor cleaner and always follow cleaning product instructions and adhere to caution before use. Other than that, highly abrasive scrubbing tools are not recommended as they can damage your flooring.

5) Can I install SPC flooring outdoor, the staircase, or on the wall?

SPC flooring is definitely not suitable for outdoor application since it is made of stone polymer composite which contains the PVC element. Also, there is a decorative print on the wear layer of SPC, it will get to peel off easily if contact with rainwater. The colour of the floorboards will be faded if right direct under sun for too long.

Besides, SPC flooring is definitely suitable for staircase and skillful installer will be able to provide such service using appropriate parts and tools.

SPC pieces showing the beauty of natural variation have gain the attractions of many interior designers to use it as a wall or even ceiling decoration. It is a genius idea indeed! However, the usage of SPC flooring on walls or ceilings very much depends on the type of SPC floor used and the installation method. Just bear in mind that the cost will be higher than normal installation as it required a special skill of installation.

6) How to install SPC Flooring?

Interlock system. SPC plank that comes with a click-lock fitting system is specially made to interlock with the neighboring plank without the application of glue or underlay. The fabulous part about this click-lock fitting system is it takes only half the time required for traditional adhesive SPC installation.

7) Can it be installed on the existing floor?
Yes. But it depends on the type of your existing flooring, ensure that there are no nails sticking out above the surface if you are planning to install SPC flooring over your existing floor. Besides that, make sure to clean the subfloor and keep it dry completely. Also, fill up any cracks with cement-based patches if there is any uneven and crack surface.

8) Warranty
SPC Flooring only has a manufacturing warranty, which means the whole pack of defective floorboards can be changed when only happens before the installation. Once Vinyl is being installed, there is no warranty for other repairments and changes as well.

9) Cost
Price of SPC flooring will be different according to the brand. The price is between the range of RM5-RM15 per square foot which is excluded the installation fee. To get a more accurate quote, feel free to send your inquiries to Floor Culture FB page.

Still confuse about which type of SPC flooring is right for you? Don’t be hesitate! Just get in touch with our flooring experts:

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VINYL FLOORING

What is Vinyl Flooring?
Vinyl flooring is available in a wide range of designs, textures as well as thicknesses for both residential and commercial uses. It is a soft sheet or tile that attaches to underlayment adhesive. Vinyl is made of a mixture of PVC and plasticizers. Those flooring tiles are non-asbestos with different combinations of elegance, warmth, charm, or richness of natural products like marble and wood. Vinyl is also ideally suited for installation in residential, commercial, and public areas such as offices, restaurants, shopping areas, and schools where only low maintenance and rich-looking flooring solutions are required.

Vinyl Flooring Structure

Vinyl Flooring comes in four layers. The top layer is UV special surface treatment acts as the inhibition of bacteria, dirt resistance, easier to clean and also prevent discoloration. Secondly, protective wear layer. It is to get rid of wear and tear resistance. Thirdly, the printing layer. It is a realistic material texture and in a natural style and guarantees the stability of size as well as act as crush resistance. Lastly, underlayer PVC backing. It is to maintain the size stability of flooring regardless in hot or humid environments and glue on top of the subfloor.

PVC vinyl has a core that is made up of three separate elements which are included felt, paper, and vinyl foam which are then covered with a protective layer. In the case of textured vinyl planks, an inhibitor is often applied. PVC vinyl flooring is the thinnest vinyl flooring at between 3mm and 5mm which makes it more flexible; however, it is also less forgiving of imperfections in the subfloor. This is a very soft and pliable vinyl due to its construction, so it is much more prone to dents. There are a variety range of colors and designs for you to choose since they are not natural woods.

Types of Vinyl Flooring

1) Glue down type Vinyl & Installation Method

The glue-down installation method involves the use of an adhesive to adhere your dry back luxury vinyl flooring to its base. Using an adhesive creates dimensional stability that ensures the flooring maintains its natural characteristics. It is often seen as the more traditional form of the floor, modern glue down vinyl still has all the upsides that make luxury vinyl easy to maintain, pet-friendly, and good for rooms like kitchens and bathrooms – which is probably why you’re considering it for your home.

Before installing glue-down type vinyl, just make sure the subfloor is clean and smooth. The flatter your subfloor, the better the finish you will achieve. Ideally, your subfloor must have no more than a 3mm deviation under a 2m straightedge when laid across the surface, less than 3mm will give less visible undulations as light reflects from the surface. Apply the glue to the surface of subfloor and wait for it to dry. After this, just stick the vinyl onto the floor.

Pros
  • More durable, long-lasting, and reliable type of vinyl plank flooring.
  • Easy to replace or repair and can be done one plank at a time
  • Affordable option
  • A better option for high traffic areas that will have rolling traffic

Cons
  • Vinyl is a synthetic material that is non-biodegradable and hard to recycle. Most vinyl flooring will end up in landfills.
  • Softer material than most laminates, hardwoods, and tiles.
  • Vinyl flooring can be punctured easily with very sharp objects
2)  Interlock-system Vinyl & Installation Method

Floating vinyl plank flooring simply lays over the sub-floor in a “floating” fashion. They don’t have any adhesive tape or glue on the back of them. This makes this type of flooring much easier to install. It can be a DIY project.  And, if you wanted to replace the floor, it was much easier to rip up.

Since it can be DIY, it is simple to be installed. PE foam isn’t needed for the interlock-system vinyl, and we can install it onto the tiles. The thickness of interlock-system vinyl normally comes at 5mm. First, determine the design that you like and position them on the floor before you install them. Then you’ll need to prep your planks. Make sure you acclimate them before installation.

Vinyl floating floors come with interlocking mechanisms so you can simply snap the next plank into place against your first installed plank. A rubber mallet is needed to secure the planks into place if there are any gaps between them.
Do not install the Vinyl on the parquet flooring too. Self-leveling is required if the subfloor is not flat at all before installing Vinyl flooring.

Pros
  • Easier to install
  • Thicker than the glue-down options generally are and is less likely to have issues with the top layer coming off over time.
  • More waterproof than glued-down flooring
  • The installation process is eco-friendly

Cons
  • Cannot be refurbished. Frequent changes in moisture and temperature can cause the flooring to expand and contract and, over time can damage the floor.

How to clean vinyl flooring?

The best way to clean vinyl flooring is to sweep away debris with a soft-bristle broom and then wipe away dirt with a damp microfiber mop. Most importantly, don’t use strong and harmful detergents (bleach) on your floating vinyl floor. Instead, use a natural disinfectant such as vinegar mixed with water to disinfect and clean your floors.

How to know how many packs of vinyl floorings that you need?

1) First thing first, calculate the area that you wish to cover with vinyl flooring.
Eg:
Nett Area: 150 sqft [15ft (length) x 10ft (width)]
2) A
dd between 5%-10% wastage round-up with the total area.
3)
Divide that by how many square feets per boxes.
4) Lastly, you will know how many cartons of floorings that you need to purchase.

What are the differences between Vinyl flooring and Laminate flooring?

There are a lot of similarities between Vinyl and Laminate floorings. However, there are some significant differences between the two. Vinyl is entirely synthetic while laminates commonly from natural materials. Vinyl has some advantages that laminate does not have, which is heat-resistant and waterproof. These are important as they determine where you should install these two different types of floorings. Also, you can find PVC options that resemble everything from wide-plank wood flooring to a thin-strip parquet.

In a nutshell, vinyl is a better choice when you need water resistance, a longer lifespan, and durability in your flooring. Meanwhile, laminate is preferable if you want a more stylish appearance, lower costs, and a comfortable feel underfoot.

How long is Vinyl Flooring supposed to last?

Vinyl floors can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years, depending on their quality and how they're installed and maintained.

What is the cost of Vinyl Flooring?

The price of vinyl flooring is different. It depends on the type of vinyl which are including glued-down vinyl and interlocking system vinyl. It is normally around RM5 for the former and RM8 for the latter. Same with other floorings, it may increase depends on the quality of vinyl as well.

To get a more accurate quote, feel free to send your inquiries to Floor Culture FB page.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE CHOOSING LAMINATE FLOORING?

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE CHOOSING LAMINATE FLOORING?
Laminate is mainly made from wood by products fused with resins. It is popularly used by homeowners who prefer the style of wood. However, laminate flooring is usually not waterproof and will be easily damaged if the water sits on it for a long period of time. Laminate floors are good for homes and businesses because they’re affordable, easy to install as well as easy to clean and very scratch resistant. They can also make your space look stylish and more inviting for people.

But before you decide on a specific flooring design, you should know that laminate floorings have a variety of specifications.

Here are some questions that are frequently asked before customers decide to install laminate floor:

  1. What is the laminate floor installation method?

  2. What is the maintenance like for laminate flooring?

  3. What is the function of underlayment?

  4. What is the thickness that we should go for?

  5. Where to install laminate flooring?

  6. What is the cost of laminate flooring?

Here we are going to eliminate your doubt. Before we start, here are some general introductions of laminate floor.

AC Rating for laminate flooring

Generally, there are few types of laminate flooring that are available in the Malaysia market:

  • AC 1: home use with little foot traffic, like bedrooms.
  • AC 2: home use with medium foot traffic, like living rooms and dining rooms.
  • AC 3: home use in all foot traffic areas. This includes high foot traffic areas, like kitchen, corridors, and home offices.
  • AC 4: home use in all traffic areas and can meet some commercial standards if warranted.
  • AC 5: the most durable laminate available and can withstand heavy commercial traffic. For instance, it is used in department stores and public buildings.
After everyday hustle-bustle of life, homes – castle to each one of their own, serve as a welcome retreat. Laminate flooring is the most impact-resistant, castor-proof as well as impervious to cigarette burns and stains. The marks left by pens or nail polish can easily be removed basically due to the pore-free surface of the material.

Ease of Installation

Even the inexperienced homeowner can install new flooring in as little as a weekend without special tools or skills when installing laminate flooring, unlike those needed to install carpets, stone, or tile. Moreover, laminate flooring does not require waxing, sanding, polishing, or sealing to retain its beautiful appearance, making it even more useful for those with little time to spare for extensive cleaning tasks.
Durability
Laminate flooring is protected by a tough external layer and resin coating, a laminate floor is much stronger and more scratch-resistant, impact-resistant, and longer-lasting than any hardwood, vinyl, or carpet. It’s good for a home with pets and children.

Good stain resistant
Most laminate flooring manufacturers offer extensive warranty protection against stains, fading, and moisture damage.

Easy to clean

Laminate’s superior stain and moisture-resistant surface coating make spills easy to clean. This special surface doesn’t require waxes or varnishes to maintain its original look.

FAQs about laminate floorings.

Here are some questions that are frequently asked before customers decide to install laminate floor:

Laminate Flooring-online shop

1) What is the laminate floor installation method?

Laminate is very quick and easy to install; you can lay down hundreds of square feet in one weekend. Older types of laminate flooring required you to glue pieces to each other, but virtually all of today's laminate flooring uses a modified tongue-and-groove system best described as ''click-and-lock'' system, in which the planks are joined in an interlocking fashion, edge-to-edge and end-to-end.  This installation method also allows laminated floors to be easily replaced if damaged

Click-lock installation system

2) What is the maintenance like for laminate flooring?
No excessive water
Laminate floor is easy to take care of. Basically, we just need to clean with vacuum and broom. Floor waxing is not necessary for laminate floors. Additionally, we must avoid excessive water when mopping, which can seep into the seams between boards and causing swelling.

3) What is the function of underlayment

PE Foam underlay

Laminate floor needs a good and even subfloor just like other floorings. PE foam, Eva foam or IXPE is needed to reside between the subfloor and laminate to detach the two surfaces and providing for a softer footfall. It protects your laminate against damage and prolongs the lifespan as well as providing other benefits including noise reduction, comfort, and insulation. Laminate can make the floor feel colder in the winter, especially when it’s installed on a cold subfloor and is not quite as cold on your feet.

4) What is the thickness that we should go for?

Since laminate flooring can be installed on top of existing floors, and the optimum would be 8mm floorboards to minimize the amount of added height for house owners. However, if added durability is needed, 12mm floorboards are recommended, as they generally come with AC5 coating. You will have less impact resistance and will help to reduce the floorboard movement as well.

5) Where to install laminate?

The living room and dining room are the perfect places for installing laminates. Just be sure to use furniture protector pads under your chairs and couches to keep from scuffing the laminate surface. Make sure you buy a laminate with an AC rating that is tough enough and suit for the way you want to use your floor. And be aware that pools of standing water will cause problems with your laminate floor, just as it would with a wood floor. Clean up spills quickly and damp mop rather than wet mop your floor.

6) What is the cost of laminate flooring?

The price of laminate flooring is from RM6.50 per square foot including installation. However, this may increase depending on the AC rating and thickness. Besides that, additional work may be required to even it out before installation if the existing subfloor is very uneven.

To get a more accurate quote, you can send your requirements to Floor Culture FB page.

However, there are cons of laminate flooring too.

1) It sounds quite hollow

Since laminates tend to be thinner than timber and is installed above the subfloor, it can create a hollow and empty sound. It might be a problem if you need your own room to be quiet. However, this problem can be solved with the use of underlayment.
2) It isn’t recommended to use in the bathroom and laundry room

Laminate flooring is not waterproof. This restricts where it can be installed and has higher maintenance. Any moisture that built up underneath the flooring will cause swelling and expanding too. You can make your laminate floor more water-resistant by installing underlayment.
Last but not least, what you have to consider before you buying laminate floor?

i) Design of laminate flooring

There are a lot of laminate floors, but not the same quality. What you must do is to have a one-on-one session with the manufacturer regarding the best brands and options in order for you to know more about the different designs of laminate flooring.

ii) Choose the thickness of laminates

You have to consider is how much money you are willing to spend on your laminate flooring. The thicker the board, the more laminate will cost you. Other than that, it deepens on how noisy is the room that you stay in, better to go with the 12mm laminate flooring, vice versa.

iii) Warranty of laminates

Even if the laminate floors are strong and resistant, the one that is backed up by a warranty is the best. It depends on where you install the laminates. As mentioned earlier, there are around 10 years warranty for residential areas and around 5 years warranty for commercial areas.

By now, you might be quite clear about what to consider before purchasing laminate floorings.

TYPES OF FLOORING TO CONSIDER

Sep 28, 2021
TYPES OF FLOORING TO CONSIDER
What are the general types of flooring?

The term flooringrefers to the lower enclosing surface of spaces within buildings. Your choice of flooring is one of the most important decisions you must make when it comes to improving your home. It is truly vital to educate yourself on what are the types of each flooring.  We’ll floor you with your flooring guide here. Here we go!

There are few types of common flooring options with their advantages, disadvantages as well as prices.

1. LAMINATE FLOORING

Laminate flooring is extremely versatile and can be easily installed even without the help of an installer. Laminate might be an attractive option if you love the hardwood but just cannot work the cost into your budget.  It can be suitable for rooms that wish to benefit from the aesthetics of a ‘natural’ floor. Laminate flooring planks usually come in 8mm or 12mm thickness and there are four layers in laminate floorings, starting from the bottom, which are included the balancing layer, core layer, pattern layer and wear layer. Good quality laminates are durable and may have up to 20-year warranty.

Laminate flooring layers are compressed with high pressure under high temperatures. Once the sheets are pressed, they are cooled and fully cured to prevent any surface imperfections. However, laminate floor is not ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. It is made from a composite material called high-density fiberboard (HDF). Once HDF is exposed directly to standing water, it breaks down and expands.

2. VINYL FLOORING

Vinyl Wood Tile maintains the original color and features even though the surface is worn because it used a highly abrasion-resistant material especially. Vinyl flooring can be supplied in rolls or tiles and is generally fixed by gluing. The most cost-effective option of the bunch, there is a wide range of patterns and colors to choose from that include basic designs and colorful mosaics.

Constructed by attaching the top wear layer to an underlayer, the price of the vinyl is usually determined by the thickness of the tile. It can be easily installed with using glue system or the ‘click and lock’ system. However, we must avoid cheaper unlicensed products as some of them are prone to scratching and poorly manufactured vinyl flooring can include high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

3. SPC FLOORING

SPC, which stands for Stone Plastic (or Polymer) Composite is typically comprised of calcium carbonate (limestone), polyvinyl chloride and plasticizers. SPC flooring can be made in a variety of formats including wider or longer planks and wider tiles. The rigid core flooring feature of SPC is completely waterproof. This helps to get rid of warping when exposed to moisture.

You can use SPC in areas of the home where hardwood and other moisture-sensitive flooring types are not typically recommended, such as laundry rooms, basements, bathrooms, and kitchens. However, even though the rigid core of SPC makes it incredibly durable and wear-resistant, it is less comfortable and accommodating underfoot than more heavily cushioned choices.

4. ENGINEERING WOOD FLOORING

Engineered wood consists of a plywood base layer and a thin layer of hardwood (veneer) on top. It is a more affordable alternative to solid hardwood, it has the look of real wood at half the cost and can be installed on top of any subflooring material. If you are concerned about true hardwood warping due to high humidity levels, like in a damp basement, engineered hardwood is a good option in areas of your home.

One of the drawbacks of engineered wood is that it’s not able to be sanded down or refinished as frequently as you could which is just similar to hardwood. However, you can apply the same high-quality coatings to engineered wood floors that you can to traditional hardwood, making them very resistant to wear and tear.

5. SOLID WOOD

Solid wood is a natural product that is obtained by cutting down trees. Traditional furniture, lovingly handcrafted when wood was plentifully available, has been a part of our homes for generations. The two main varieties include hardwood, such as oak, maple, teak, and rosewood; and softwood such as pine, rubberwood, and white cedar. It continues to be the top choice for its great appearance and long-term ROI.

When exposed to constant moisture, solid wood will get damaged on the surface. However, it can be sanded and re-polished to restore the shine. Solid wood is often used for furniture, construction, cabinetry, and flooring. Real solid wood flooring can be very expensive as timber flooring has to be taken from a responsible manufacturer or resource. Besides that, each piece of solid flooring planks and strips are unique in terms of wood patterns, grooves and designs. Thus, it gives a strong posh identity for the wood flooring owner.
